Hut Cave Tour

The weather has gone seriously downhill - we're sitting in a 30 knot, -30C storm - and so most of our science is off. However, the weather inside the ice caves is barely affected since they are sheltered from the wind and cold, and so we were able to do a little bit of GPS surveying inside the caves yesterday. It's wonderfully warm, moist, and dark in the caves. Here are a few highlights from the trip.

  1. How warm is it inside the caves? Or is it all just relative given that it's -30C outside! Are there names for the different types of icicles/ice formations?

  2. There's warm air coming from vents that melt the ice and create the caves.... The warmest air I felt was probably 50 - 60 degrees F, but the actual average air temperature in the caves is just around 32F.

The word in camp is that there are "A-axis" and "C-axis" crystals.... not very poetic! We have a lot of unofficial names for formations, but a lot of them aren't PG ;)
